A beautiful Prayer

Take a look at the following beautiful shloka:

यं शैवा: समुपासते शिव इति ब्रह्मेति वेदान्तिनो

बौद्धा बुद्ध इति प्रमाणपटव: कर्तेति नैयायिका:।

अर्हन्नित्यथ जैनशासनरता: कर्मेति मीमांसका:

सोऽयं नो विदधातु वांछितफलं त्रैलोक्यनाथो हरि:।।

English Meaning

May the Lord of the universe grant us our wishes who is worshipped by

- the Shaiva as Shiva,

- the Vedantins as Brahman

- the Buddhists as Buddha

- the Naiyaayikas who specialize in knowledge as 'Karta"

- the Jains as Arhant

- the ritualists of the Mimamsa school as Karma

There is a very powerful implication behind these simple words. This prayer holds the key to bridging the religious differences and the resultant problems. It implies that it is a myth that we worship different Gods; instead, we worship the same God in different forms, and give Him different names. Every religion says that God is all powerful being, present everywhere. How is it possible to have more than one instances of such an all powerful being? It has to be the same God for everyone.

And when it is the same God for both of us, can there be a reason for any difference between you and me?

Just think about it.

What is All This Stuff about God?

The choice of topic for this post may surprise you, what is there to discuss about it? We are already well versed with our God; what else can we possibly talk about in this post? The following lines inspired me to write this post:

हरी हरी वसुंधरा पे नीला नीला ये गगन

के जिसपे बादलो की पालकी उड़ा रहा पवन

दिशाये देखो रंग भरी चमक रही उमंग भारी

ये किस ने फूल फूल पे किया श्रृंगार है

ये कौन चित्रकार है, ये कौन चित्रकार

Looking at the beauty of nature around us can make us wonder about the greatness of its creator, the Almighty God who has created the sky, clouds, stars, Sun, Moon, Earth, mountains, flowers, rivers, ocean, and everything we see around us.

We have already learnt a few things about the God whom we worship from our religion, which is a different picture for each of us based on our religion. Some of us have learnt that He is an invisible being, while others believe that He has a form, and this form itself may be different for each of us.

People worship God, give Him different names, or even deny His existence, but let us face it, no one can ignore Him. Does it not point to a strong possibility that such a mighty being is more likely to exist than not?

Most religions advocate that God in some form created the universe and looks after it. If you ask a scientist, he may give you an altogether different answer, talking about the big bang theory, evolution, and other scientific principles that govern the creation and running of the universe, denying the role of any supernatural being in the process.

Let us first look at this important question – did God create everything in the universe? Actually if we change our viewpoint a little, there is no conflict between the scientific view and the religious view on this subject. Imagine that a boy throws the ball in the air we can look at the ball going up and explain the phenomenon in different ways, not really in conflict with each other:

We can pay attention to the ball following the laws of motion. It went up in the air since it had a vertical velocity under the influence of a force and countered by gravitational force etc.

We can also explain it simply as, "The boy threw the ball in the air, that is why the ball went up".

Similarly, the scientific view that Big Bang started the universe may be true, but it does not deny the possibility that God Himself started the Big Bang process, similar to the boy throwing the ball.

The existence of God is established, but how do we reconcile different positions taken by different religions about Him?  Which one is correct? Are the Gods worshipped by people of different faith are really different? By the very definition of an Omnipotent God, it sounds logical that it is the same entity, who is given different name and form by different religions. Also, it seems that God Himself does not mind the diverse views people take about Him.

That brings another vital question, Did God create religions? This looks unlikely as why would He create so many different versions in that case? Religion seems to be an attempt by man to understand and explain the universe around him. God does not want people to follow any one particular faith only. The evidence for this is that even after thousands of years people following different faiths and beliefs still co-exist happily together.

How can one experience God? When you go out and see the beautiful nature around, think about its creator and you can begin experiencing Him. Prayer is another established way to experience Him. Taking time to pray as per your belief is the most direct way to experience God. When good things happens in life, remember to thank Him, and when you are in trouble, take your problems to Him in prayer.

Disclaimer: The discussion above is just my attempt to form a simple common view about this very complex topic. No disrespect is meant for any faith, religion, or belief. Advance apologies if anything in the post sounds offensive to you.

Sanyam - The Power of Self-Control

Sanyam is one of the key principles of life taught by Jain philosophy, the most powerful concept. Jain Anuvrat Geet is an inspiring song that talks about its virtues. As a child, I heard this beautiful song in the voice of Mukesh, and I have been deeply impressed by the way he rendered it.

It is likely that you may not have heard it. To give you the feel of this inspiring song, I recorded it in my voice. Watch the following video to listen to the song.

What is Sanyam and what are its benefits in life, and why should you follow it? I have attempted to explain the concept in simple everyday terminology. My apologies to my learned friends if it appears a little over-simplification.

Every morning when I light a deepak for prayer, and watch with fascination the light produced by it, I am reminded of the fact that the fire which is helping me illuminate our home can also be very devastating at times. Similarly, a river provide us water, so vital for life, but it can cause destruction through floods. Atomic energy helps generate electricity in a Nuclear power plant, but the same energy can cause severe destruction as an atom bomb. There are numerous examples of an energy being helpful as well as harmful to us.

Let us examine it somewhat closely. What conditions makes it possible to utilize an energy gainfully and how does it become destructive? What I see in a lamp is a very small fire fed by tiny amounts of fuel in the form of oil sucked by the wick. The fire remains regulated through the limited supply of fuel. This keep it controlled and far below the danger mark. Compare it to a jungle fire where it burns uncontrolled and gets stronger by the burning wood and blowing wind, causing destruction and damage.

Therefore, it is clear that a controlled or channelized energy works constructively for us, while an uncontrolled one can result in harmful negative effects.

In the same way, when we harness or channelize our energies in a positive way, it becomes a constructive force that moves our world. If we do not, it will cause negative impact on our lives. To channelize our energies, we must exercise self-control or sanyam that ensures that the fire does not get an uncontrolled supply of fuel and get out of control. This is a very strong argument in favor of living a disciplined, purposeful life.

There is another way to leverage this principle. Whenever we notice our own thoughts creating negativity in our life, we should step back and look for any area where we have fueled our energies without regulation so much that it has got out of control. Recognizing such an area and taking corrective action to get back in control will certainly reduce the negative effect.

I am positive that sanyam, self-regulation, self-control,  and moderation is the most important principle which is the key to gain happiness and balance in life. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

A New Look at Jain Das Lakshan Parv

Das Lakshan is a religious festival that Jains celebrate with a great enthusiasm. It is marked by ten days of religious festivities in which each day is devoted to one virtue or dharma. Many of us view it as a period to recharge our spiritual side, in which we devote time in the temple doing worships, fasts, and listening to spiritual discourses.

However, the ten virtues that are central to this festival give us much more than religious and moral values. In this post, I will try to outline a different way of looking at Paryushan by taking a few of these virtues as example. If we use this new paradigm, we find that these virtues have solid practical advice hidden in them that has relevance in our daily life. Even if we try to understand and practice one of these virtues in real life situations, it has a potential of changing our life for better.

Uttam Chama
Uttam Mardav
Uttam Aarjav
Uttam Shauch
Uttam Satya
Uttam Sanyam
Uttam Tap
Uttam Tyaag
Uttam Akinchanya
Uttam Brahamacharya

Uttam Kshama – Forgiveness
When someone hurts us, we should be quick to forgive him, and if we hurt someone, we should come forward and apologize. This is established as one of the most fundamental way of improving inter-personal relationships. Most common cause of a broken relationship is the lack of forgiveness. Hence, it makes a perfect practical sense to adopt forgiveness as a way of life and be more tolerant towards the fault of others. However, it goes a little further and urges you to be equally tolerant towards your own flaws as well. When your own actions do not measure up to your standards, do not be too harsh in your judgment. Accept your own mistakes with the same feeling of forgiveness as you accept others.

Uttam Mardav – Humility and Modesty
All of us are created equal; no one is inferior or superior. If we start treating others with humility, it will pave the way for a much better society. The principle is simple to understand, but not easy to practice. People either tend to treat others as inferior or superior to them most of the times. This is of significant practical value as getting rid of your pride can help you relate much better to others and win you many friends.

Uttam Arjav – Integrity
If one lacks integrity, he will think one thing, speak something else and do something entirely different. Such a person loses credibility very quickly. On the contrary if we want to win the trust of others, we have to practice integrity. Say as you think, and do as you say. This is not just a great moral value, but most successful companies are adopting it as corporate value these days. Without integrity and trust, it is hard to do business, and even harder to establish a long lasting relationship.

Uttam Shauch – Purity and Contentment
While we talk about purity here, it is not only the purity of body that can be achieved by cleanliness, but purity of soul, that requires us to be content. There is no end of desires, and if we are not content with what we have, it leads to unhappiness in life.

Uttam Satya – Truth
The benefits of being truthful are very well known. It has such an impact on our life and happiness. Gandhiji also gave a lot of stress on being truthful. It also implies that we should always seek the truth. However, this principle goes a bit further and asks us to not only speak truth, but also ensure that we do not hurt others by saying harsh words to them. With the rampant menace of fake news, it has become vital now to apply this principle before we post anything on social media.

Uttam Sanyam – Self-regulation, and Moderation
Watch a deepak (lamp) that illuminate our house; it contains the same fire that can cause devastation if left uncontrolled, but when this fire is carefully regulated in the lamp, it gives us light. This is a very practical argument in favor of living a disciplined, purposeful life.

Uttam Tap - Reducing Indulgence
It is well known that over-indulgence inevitably leads to unhappiness in life. Uttam Tap aims at
reducing indulgence and keeping desires and passions in control. Some of the useful practices involved at physical level are fasting, avoiding overeating and unhealthy foods. At the spiritual level it involves meditation, which is a universally acknowledged practice to steady your mind.

Uttam Tyag - Renunciation
Uttam Tyag or renunciation works at two levels - at physical level it is about giving up worldly possessions and live a life of contentment while keeping desires in check, and at emotional level by letting go of the emotions, that can cause major stress to us. You are known not by the amount of your accumulated wealth but by the wealth you renounce for others. Renunciation is done at the highest level by saints who renounce not only the household but also all their negative emotions.

Uttam Akinchan – Non-attachment
Akinchan encourages us to reduce parigraha (belongings) and reduce our attachment towards it. It is also about avoiding excessive consumption. While the world is grappling with the problem of how to go green to control the damage to our environment, Akinchan shows a simple way to do it. If all of us reduce our consumption, our belongings, our carbon footprint, we can leave a better earth for our future generations. We need to learn how to go after less, not more. Excessive attachment  to possessions causes unhappiness in our life.

Uttam Brahmacharya - Free Yourself from Senses
Uttam Brahmacharya aims at reducing our dependence on sensory gratification so that you can use your energy for higher pursuits. We can become more effective if we stop being a slave of our senses, as this allows us to do what is important for us, not just what gives us the momentary physical pleasure. The saints practice this to the highest degree with their body, speech and mind, refraining from all pleasures associated with the senses so that they can pursue their supreme goal of salvation.

I offer my advance apologies to the purists who may not like this interpretation of Das Lakshan Parv, my intent is not to temper with religion, but to extract more practical value out of it.

Laughter with God

How do you relate to God? Do you fear God or do you love Him? How do you behave in His presence? Can you stay at peace or do you always look for wishes to ask and ways to please Him? How do you take it when someone cracks a joke involving God? Do you instantly see it as blasphemy?

Be assured, God wants us to be happy, so He is not likely to take offense on small jokes. Why should religion be a dry affair with no humor?

Here is a collection of such jokes that I have heard over time. It is just meant to create some lighter moments and no offense is meant to any religion.

Parking Problems

Prakash was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up toward heaven, he said, "Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to temple every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up drinking.”
Miraculously, a free parking place appeared. Prakash looked up again and said, "Never mind. I found one."

Ganpati Dance
Once a person was drowning in the river. He immediately started praying frantically to Ganpati. Ganpati immediately appeared, looked at him, and then started dancing. The person was confused and angry - "Lord, I am drowning and you are dancing" Lord Ganesh said - "Son, at my immersion, you also danced like this"

Prayer for Lottery
Pappu was complaining to God - "Dear God, I have been praying for years to get a Lottery Prize, but you have not listened to my prayers".
God says to him, "Sure I will make you win the prize, but can you at least buy the ticket first?"

God’s Share
A man, who needed some cash very badly, was walking on the road. He prayed to God,”Lord, if I somehow find Rs 1000 today, I will make sure to donate half of it at the temple.” Suddenly a miracle took place and he found a Rs 500 note lying in the middle of road. As he picked it up, he thanked God profusely and said, “Thank You Lord, it seems you do not trust my promise, hence you deducted Rs 500 upfront.”

The Massive World of God
Mohit had an encounter with God in his dream and he started chatting with him.
Mohit - O Almighty, I have heard that everything is massive in your world. How long is your one second?
God – Equal to one hundred years of earth.
Mohit – How much is your one paisa?
God – Equal to one hundred crore Rupees of earth.
Mohit – O Lord, just give me your one paisa.
God – OK, Just wait a second.

The Dishonest Postman
Raju was a postman. One day, when he noticed a letter addressed to “Dear God”, he got curious and opened it. The letter was from a local farmer Bhola. He wrote in the letter,”Dear God, as you know, my crop was damaged by rain this year. I have no other source of income. Please send me Rs 1000 as soon as you get this letter”. Raju knew that Bhola was in genuine trouble and he was impressed by Bhola’s strong faith. He immediately decided to help and shared it with others at the post office. They managed to collect Rs 800, and delivered it as a money order from God. All of them felt very satisfied to be of help to someone needy.
Next week Raju found another letter from Bhola to God that said,”Dear God, Thanks for such a quick response. I received Rs 800 yesterday. I know you must have sent Rs 1000, but we can’t help it, the dishonest postman must have kept Rs 200.”

One-on-One with Ganpati Bappa

It is Ganeshotsav time again. We have been doing Ganpati puja for many years, but this year it was special as it gave me an opportunity of a one-on-one talk with Ganpati Bappa. I will try to capture the story of the interesting encounter in this post.

My wife had been busy making preparations for the eagerly awaited event for past few weeks. Though she has a well-oiled process in place by now, yet she takes a lot of pain in the preparations for the puja. Particularly, finding the desired idol is a daunting task that takes several iterations. That’s why I was really relieved when she managed to find a beautiful idol with relative ease this year. It gave us a happy feeling that it is going to be a good puja this year.

However, on the day of puja, something was not quite right inside me. I had been feeling somewhat stressed out lately due to a number of problems and worries that were keeping my mood down. So as I sat down for the puja, I could feel heaviness in my head, a tense body and a tense mind.

My feeling of stress reduced a bit and I gradually calmed down when Panditji started the puja. He has a gentle way of chanting the mantra such that the sounds immediately soothe your mind. He also has a knack of keeping us on our feet by making us recite a mantra, or close our eyes and pray while he chants the mantras. This had a meditation like effect on me, and in less than half an hour, I started feeling much more relaxed.

A couple of hours later when the puja got over I just sat down alone looking at the beautiful face of Ganpati Bappa and saying nothing.

Then Bappa broke the silence, “Something is wrong with you today Sanjay. You do not look your usual self.”

I got startled at first to hear Bappa talk, and took a few seconds to regain my composure. It was not an everyday occurrence that you get to chat with Bappa.

I - with folded hands – “Thanks for gracing our home with your presence Ganpati Bappa. I am sorry I am bothering you with my petty worries. Things are alright with me, nothing wrong. It is just a large number of small problems that have added together to clutter my mind.”

Bappa -  “What will be life without problems? Why feel down because of the problems?”

I – “Yes I know and often apply this wisdom while dealing with my problems. But this time, there are too many of them”

Bappa – “Don’t worry too much. Look at the positive side of things and you will feel better.”

I – “That’s the trouble Bappa. I am trying everything I know about positive thinking. It is helpful to some extent, but the clouds of worry keep coming again and again.”

Bappa – with a smile in His eyes - “It is indeed funny to see a champion of positive mindset struggling to conquer his own worries. तूने तो सबको राह दिखाई तू अपनी मंज़िल क्यूं भूला? :)”

 I – with a touch of impatience - “You do not understand. I used to believe that since I spread the message of hope, it will come naturally to me; but this time it is really different. I am down with an onslaught of negative thoughts and despair and it does not help that I have been a champion of hope.”

Bappa – with a wider smile – “I can try to understand if you explain your problem to me.”

I – “I am worried that I may botch up on the new responsibility I have been given in the office, about our approaching old age, about the health of my parents, about the future of my kids, hundreds of nagging unfinished tasks, mounting expenses that have upset the budget, not enough savings, and many more such things.”

Bappa – “Why are you concerned so much? मैं हूँ ना. Give your burden to me. I will set everything right.”

I – “You have millions of devotees. किस किस का बोझ उठाएगे आप? I have to learn to carry my burden myself.”

Bappa – “I agree that you should take every possible action within your circle of influence. But as far as I know, you are already doing it. Then why worry about things over which you have no control.”

I – “Bappa, I shiver to imagine the consequences if things go wrong. If you want to help, please help me overcome this fear.”

Bappa – “You keep doing what is in your circle of influence. Do not avoid or put off a required action for any reason what-so-ever. Leave the rest of the worries to me. I will do what is in my circle of influence, which as you know has infinite radius.”

I – “Why do you take everything so lightly? I know from experience that life for us humans is not easy. If you do not walk the tight rope every day, you are sure to fall down.”

Bappa – “Good you mentioned experience. Let us go back in time. Do you remember your situation at puja 15 years back?”

I – “Let me try. That was the year 2000. There was economic uncertainty due to dot com burst. I was worried about my job, old age, kid's future, parents health, savings, finances. Oh yes, when I think of it, my situation at that time was very similar to what it is today, in fact it was much worse as I had little security.”

Bappa – looking closely in my eyes – “Try to recall what you asked me in prayer that year. Did I or did I not fulfill your wishes?”

This statement and the eye contact was His masterstroke. As I strained my memory I could recall that I prayed that year for two categories of wishes:

Must

These were the developments that I desperately wanted to happen in my life, but had no clue how to make them happen.

Nice to Have

These were wishes that were lower in priority but still important enough.

And suddenly I realized that Bappa not only fulfilled all the wishes in my Must and Nice to Have list, but He went beyond it and gave me bliss and happiness in life that were beyond my imagination. This was an eye opener and I suddenly felt a strong surge of gratitude.
You are truely awesome!”

I was all set to heap more praises on Bappa, but got interrupted by a loud sound of chanting of mantras. Suddenly, I woke up from my trance and opened my eyes to find myself with Pandit ji doing the puja. I felt relieved that nobody noticed my transgression. My head was feeling much lighter now, the tension had magically disappeared. I looked at Ganpati Bappa, and there was this familiar mischievous smile in his eyes.

You are truly awesome!”

So, this was the story of my chat with Ganpati in my thoughts that helped me get rid of my worries. I had the itch that my chat with Ganpati Bappa got interrupted at the point when I was about to thank Him and sing praises for Him. So, I am leaving you with this vandana that I sang in His praise afterwards.

Meri Bhavna - An invaluable lesson on Positive Attitude

I grew up listening to and reciting Meri Bhavna, a popular Jain prayer written by Pandit Jugal Kishor Mukhtar. As a child, I did not know the deep meaning behind its simple words. As I take a fresh look at it again, I am amazed at the practical wisdom it contains. It has tips to develop an attitude that helps deal with stress, greed, resentment, fear and failures.

I am sure that if we absorb even half of this wisom, it will be a big step towards becoming a positive person and living a purposeful life. It is good to know that recently it has been included in the school books as well.

I am capturing the original Meri Bhavna below along with an English translation by Devendra Jain. Read it and decide for yourself.

He who conquered love and hatred, and vanquished sensual temptation,
True cosmic knowledge who attained and showed the path to salvation;
Some may call Him Buddha, Hari, Jina, or may call him Brahma, Supreme;
His thoughts and deep devotion may be in my heart and mind and dream.

Who do not long for sensual zest, whose feelings are gentle and right;
In well being of world and self, who do endeavor day and night.
Who do penance of selflessness and who have no regrets in life;
To lessen sufferings of this world, such learned sages do strife.

May I always look up to them and may I keep them in my mind;
Practice their conduct in my life, I wish my mind be so inclined.
May I never injure a life; of lying, may I never think;
Not wanting others' wealth and spouse, contentment-nectar may I drink.

May egotism I never feel; angry, may never I become;
On seeing others' worldly wealth, to envy may I not succumb.
May I always feel and ponder to act in true and sincere way;
I always may do good to all, as far as I can, everyday.

For living beings of the world, feelings of friendship may I show;
For woeful creatures, from my heart, may stream of kindness ever flow.
The cruel, wicked and evil doers, my mood and mind may not resent;
May thoughts of mine be so mended, of others I may be tolerant.

My heart may be so full of love, whenever I see a noble man;
My mind may be so full of joy, I serve him as much as I can.
May I never be ungrateful; malice never be in my mind;
May I not see faults of people; high virtues may I always find.

Let someone call me good or bad, let riches come or turn away,
Whether I live for million years, or I face death this very day.
Whether someone does frighten me, or even tempt me in some way;
May my steps never falter from proven good and righteous way.

Neither may I be too joyous, nor may I be nervous in pain;
I may not dread stormy river, a jungle, ghost or rough mountain.
Firm, unshaken and well balanced, my mind may ever grow and grow;
In beloved's passing, evil's face, and endurance may I ever show.

May worldly creatures be blissful, uneasiness may no one feel;
Forgetting ill will, pride and guilt, new songs of joy may sing with zeal.
May truth be talk of every home, there be no sign of evil act;
Enlightened people may improve, fruits of this life may get, in fact.

Misfortune, dread may never come; bountiful rains come well in time;
May rulers always be righteous, may justice be even, sublime.
Disease and famine may not be; may people have plenty and peace;
Nonviolence be the rule of world, may world be full of joy and ease.

May mutual love pervade the world and dark delusions fade away;
Untrue, unkind, intriguing, harsh, such words, no one may ever say.
May all become Yugvir at heart; welfare and peace may all attain;
Facing all sorrows with patience, nature of truth may all men gain.

An Inspiring Story of Faith

A couple was peacefully going in a boat across a broad river. The husband was rowing the boat. Suddenly out of nowhere, the waves started rocking the boat and the current got stronger by the second. It was becoming almost impossible to control the boat. Help from another boat was out of question as they knew very well that they were all alone in the waters.

The wife was terrified completely. Initially there was only panic in her face but as the rocking increased, she started weeping uncontrollably. To her utter surprise her husband’s face was peaceful in spite of the uncertainty to life. But in the midst of this roaring wave of tides and currents she could only think about living through it. With great effort, the husband could somehow control the boat and they reached the bank safe.

The wife let go a big sigh of relief on escaping alive from the ordeal, but the husband continued to be calm and collected. She finally could not keep her curiosity under check, and asked her husband, “I saw your face there; it was as if nothing had happened at all. Of course you were trying hard to save us from drowning but you were at complete ease. How was that possible? Why didn’t you panic?”

The husband smiled pleasantly and drew a small knife from his pocket. He pointed it towards her throat and asked, “Are you scared now?”

The wife burst out laughing and said,“We have lived together for so many years now. We have shared more than our lives…I know you better than any person in the world. I believe you. How could you point a knife and expect me to panic?”

“Exactly!” said the husband, “Even my relation with my God is long enough for me to trust him. Not even for a nanosecond did I have a thought that the waters would topple the boat. I knew he wouldn’t do that to us."

"I had no reason to panic, I simply believed him!"

How often do we start fearing the worse when faced with an adversity? Do we ever pose a faith so strong in God in difficult situations? I am sure if we do it, He would not have let His children down.

Respect for My Mercedes

A Monk used to come to Delhi regularly, where he always slept in the house of a poor devout man, as nobody cared about him. Years later, when his reputation had spread all over the country, he came to Delhi, not on foot as before, but in a Mercedes driven by a chauffeur.

The wealthiest man of the town, who had never wanted to have anything to do with the monk, came to meet him the moment he heard about the arrival, and begged him to lodge in his house.

But the monk said, "Nothing has changed in me to make you respect me more than before. What is new is the Mercedes and the chauffeur. Take them for your guests, but let me stay with my old host, as always."

If this story rings a bell in your mind, you are either living around Delhi, or have at least visited it :)

The Tale of Two Magic Lamps

We all have an unending chain of desires, and at times we want something very badly, but cannot get it in spite of our best efforts. This makes us wonder if there is a better way to get what we want in life? We have heard story of Aladin and his magic lamp, that fulfilled all the wishes of its master. If only we could get hold of such a lamp, life would be such a fun. We will be able to get whatever we ask for. But we quickly dismiss it as fiction; such things do not happen in real life.

What if I tell you about not one but two such magic lamps that are available for you? Sounds too good to be true? Read on the tale of two magic lamps that can help you fulfill your wishes.

Magic Lamp 1: Power of Prayer

If you want something really badly, why not ask God to provide it? Nothing can be simpler and more powerful than prayer. As a child, whenever you needed something, you demanded it from your father, and he tried his best to fulfill your wish. Now, if you ask anything from the Almighty Father, will he not fulfill your wish? But make sure to state your wish as clearly as you can. If you are confused about what you want, how can someone fulfill your wish? Even the Jinn in the magic lamp needs to be told about your wish clearly. As an example, do you want your child to develop into an independent thinker, and at the same time, wish that she accepts whatever you say without any question?  What do you really want?

Are prayers answered? There is no evidence that suggests that they are not answered. If God Himself cannot fulfill your wish, who else can? In fact, there are times when God may deliberately not grant your wish as the outcome may not be good for you, and in such cases, we should learn to accept His wisdom.

Note that I am not advocating any particular religion here. You can pray as per the custom of any religion and follow any form of God, so long as you take your wish to Him in prayer. I know that many religions advocate not asking for worldly things in prayer, but if a burning desire is holding you back, why not take it to Him?

Magic Lamp 2: Power of Assertions

The method is simple. Once a day, write down fifteen times what is it that you desire. Keep on doing it and you will find that it is turning into a truth. It may take about two to six months of writing assertions before your wish is granted.

As an example, if your name is Sanjay Jain and your wish is visit Disneyland, you will write the following sentence fifteen times.

I, Sanjay Jain, will visit Disneyland.

So simple? How do I know if it works? I read about it some years back in a book by famous cartoonist Scott Adams, and found it hard to believe it. However, just to prove it wrong, I gave it a try on a wish that was incredibly hard to achieve, and was very important for me. And to my amazement, it worked!

You must be saying now that this is the same old faith and religious stuff, and I have no idea how it works or whether it works at all. Fair enough. If you want to know if it works or not, why not try it out yourself? In the worst case, nothing happens and you do not get your wish. Then you dismiss this post and go on as usual with your life. But it is also likely that like me, you may be surprised to find that these magic lamps actually work and then all of a sudden you have added the power of two magic lamps to your life.

Now comes the question, how does it work? Frankly, I do not know. Is it important to know the answer? Take the computer that you are reading this blog on; do you have to know its internals before using it? An even simpler example is the quartz watch that you are wearing, do you have to know its working principle before you can read time on it? Do you have to be an automobile engineer with in depth knowledge of a car before you drive it? So, if you do not need to understand the insides of your computer, watch, or car to use it gainfully, why do you insist on being an expert and having the need to understand the principle behind prayer and assertions so long as these work for you?

That’s it. Enjoy your magic lamps.
